First, the key message: nothing is changing overnight. The Essential Eight remains a live, supported framework. ASD has been clear that there is "no wasted investment" for organisations aligned to the Essential Eight. Your existing control maturity carries forward into the new framework. The transition is expected to run over the next 12–24 months, with both frameworks published side-by-side on cyber.gov.au during that period.
What's actually changing?
ASD Essentials is a broader, principles-based framework, focusing on enduring security outcomes rather than fixed implementation methods. The main shifts:
- From prescribed controls to security outcomes. Rather than dictating specific controls, Essentials defines the outcomes to achieve and lets organisations choose how. ASD's examples remain concrete (e.g. phishing-resistant MFA).
- Broader coverage. The first release spans enterprise IT, cloud, and operational technology (OT), with AI-focused guidance built in.
- Board-level accountability. Essentials asks organisations to formally define executive and board accountability for cyber security.
- From one score to layered effectiveness reporting. The Essential Eight gives a single Maturity Level (0–3) for controls. ASD Essentials prioritises security effectiveness and reports by security principles and across security domains. Security posture is expressed through evidence-backed effectiveness ratings.
Who ASD Essentials is written for and where that leaves SMBs
ASD Essentials is deliberately modular, and it's aimed primarily at Commonwealth entities, critical infrastructure owners and operators, and large organisations. The initial release covers three environment types, so where you focus depends on the kind of organisation you are:
- Essentials for Enterprise IT: The direct evolution of the Essential Eight, and the right anchor for most mid-size and larger businesses and government agencies.
- Essentials for Cloud: For organisations that run heavily on SaaS and PaaS platforms.
- Essentials for Operational Technology (OT): For critical infrastructure operators and organisations with industrial/OT environments.
There's also AI-focused guidance woven through, to help you assess AI-enabled systems in your environment.
What about small and medium businesses?
There is no separate "SMB Essentials" chapter. ASD Essentials is written with larger organisations in mind, but the security outcomes behind its principles matter just as much for smaller businesses, and SMBs should apply the guidance where it's relevant to them.
What this means for you
Your Essential Eight work is not lost. It's the foundation of your Essentials posture. ASD does note, however, that controls should be checked against Essentials rather than assumed to be equivalent. That mapping is your first step at this early stage, and where Comunet can assist.
There are no mandatory deadlines yet. The Essential Eight remains the standard for assessments, tenders, cyber insurance and DISP obligations until regulators formally announce changes, so keep meeting your current obligations, and transition on a planned, risk-based timeline.
